Travelers know Florida for its white sandy beaches, vibrant cities and water-filled adventures. But this year, I traded the coastline for cowboy boots and discovered a side of Florida most people have never seen: Westgate River Ranch, a hidden gem where ranch life meets country luxury. Here, I found unique accommodations and endless activities like horseback riding, skeet shooting, and a typical American rodeo that made me feel like I had stepped into a Western movie.
Home within reach (but with AC)

Accommodations at Westgate River Ranch add to the fun and offer a fresh and adventurous traditional camping experience. From luxury teepees and glamping buggies to cozy lodge rooms and RV sites, there’s a style of stay for every type of traveler. I slept in the Luxe Conestoga Wagon—a spacious retreat that sleeps up to six guests and features a glamping concierge and golf cart, making it easy to explore the sprawling ranch in comfort and style. I’m not alone in being a fan of this fun approach to digging into a vacation: on Kayak, the resort received an “excellent” rating from previous guests.
Saturday Night Lights: Rodeo experience
One of the highlights of my Florida-style Western weekend was enjoying the Saturday night Rodeo — a Westgate River Ranch tradition that happens rain or shine (and yes, I was there in the rain!). The talent, grit and precision of the riders are on full display, demonstrating not only skill but also the deep connection and trust between horse and rider. From high-energy flag girls racing through the arena to stomping bull rides and crowd interaction, the rodeo is an unforgettable spectacle that every guest should experience.
Farm days, your way

I’m amazed at how easy it is for me to completely relax and get into vacation mode here. Everything I wanted to do was on the property, so I didn’t have to worry about planning or driving anywhere, which can be a relief, especially if you’re traveling with a group. One of my favorite activities is peaceful horseback riding across open grasslands. There’s something very grounding about connecting with nature from the saddle, and the horses—calm, well-trained, and gentle—make it a fun experience for beginner riders and kids alike.
In addition to horseback riding trails and rodeo arenas, there’s lots more to do, including trap and skeet shooting, airboat rides through Florida’s watery wilderness, and even lively street parties under the stars.
And of course, in true Florida style, the heat can be intense—so I appreciated the opportunity to cool off at the newly opened River Country Waterpark in between ranch adventures.

Relaxed bite, big flavors

Of the many places to eat on property, Smokehouse on the River is my personal favorite. This classic Southern BBQ spot, with its casual outdoor seating and smoky aroma, has quickly become one of my favorite stops. The bacon is tender and flavorful, and the sides are truly mouth-watering. If you visit, I highly recommend trying the hickory smoked BBQ brisket paired with creamy white cheddar mac & cheese.
Boots, atmosphere & Southern hospitality
During my stay, I found so much joy in the simple things—like wearing cowboy boots and leaning into the rustic, ranch-style aesthetic that surrounded me. There is something special about entering an environment so different from everyday life and spending days outdoors, breathing fresh air and enjoying the open skies.
What made this experience even more memorable was the wonderful staff at Westgate River Ranch. Their warmth, knowledge and willingness to help made a huge difference in how welcome and comfortable I felt during my stay.
