Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May marks Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Monthand Disney World celebrates with catering limited time treat inspired by Asian American and Pacific Islander stories and culture. These snacks can be found around the Walt Disney World theme parks and resort hotels. Stay tuned around the end of April for Disney’s full Foodie Guide explaining each treat and where you can find them. This savory and sweet snack is usually available throughout the month of May.

May Fourth

If you love Star Wars and puns, you probably know why May Fourth is the perfect time to celebrate the franchise. Inspired by the iconic phrase “May the force be with you,” May the Fourth have turned into a worldwide celebration of all things Star Wars, and Disney World have been getting in on the action for the past few years. On the Fourth of May, hopes Star Wars fans will be out in full force at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You might even find limited-time treats, merchandise, and meet-and-greets just for this one-day celebration.

Mother’s Day

Hopefully your second Sunday in May is highlighted, circled in red ink, and with an arrow pointing to it — it’s time to Mother’s Daya day to celebrate all the amazing women in your life. If you happen to be at Walt Disney World around Mother’s Day, you can usually find one limited-time food and drinks served at parks and resort hotels in celebration. These treats typically arrive in early May and stay around until Mother’s Day.

Memorial Day Weekend

For most American travelers, the month of May is a sign the unofficial arrival of summer with Memorial Day Weekend. While there’s usually nothing specific going on in the parks this weekend (other than the more well-attended flag retreats, which are held daily at Magic Kingdom), it’s a good idea to point out this weekend if you want to avoid the crowds. With businesses closed and kids off school this weekend, these are very busy days.

The Flower and Garden Festival Continues at EPCOT

May is the last full month of the month EPCOT Flower and Garden Festival, usually ends around June 1st. In May, the festival continues every day specialty food and drink items, the Garden Rocks Concert Series, and character topiaries found throughout EPCOT.

Disney After Hours continues and Disney H2O Glow After Hours returns to Typhoon Lagoon

If you want to enjoy bonus time in the park, Disney After Hours is a great way to do it. Hard-to-get-ticket events continue at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Hollywood Studios in May.

Also starting in May, Disney H2O Shines After Hours back for the summer in Typhoon Lagoon.

Disney H2O Glow After Hours is another example events for which tickets are difficult, meaning you will need to purchase a separate admission ticket to attend. Like other Disney After Hours events, there are also after-hours parties at Typhoon Lagoon reduced wait times for attractions, live music, food and drink specials, and more. And of course, you can enjoy the Walt Disney World water parks after dark!

Walt Disney World in May weather

May is usually when you start to notice the weather changing from spring to summer. This doesn’t mean you’ll experience the worst of Florida’s heat and humidity, but it will feel warmer than in March or April. According to Weather Spark, The average high temperature in Orlando in May is 87, and the average low temperature is 69. For context, the average high temperature in May is five degrees warmer than the average high temperature in April, which is 82, and 10 degrees warmer than the average high temperature in March, which is 77.

You may also notice an increase in the number of rainy days in May. While you can go a week at Walt Disney World in the spring without seeing much precipitation, the odds of going a week without rain are diminishing. Orlando experiences an average of 9.5 days of rain in May. This amount is much different from the peak of summer, where the average rainfall ranges from 17 to 20 days.

Tips for visiting Walt Disney World in May

Beware of Memorial Day Weekend crowds

May is usually a great time to visit Walt Disney World if you want to avoid the crowds, as May sits comfortably between spring break and the summer vacation season. Most schools are still in session, although you may see colleges break in the summer and therefore visitor numbers increase slightly as the months go by. Although the start of May usually sees fewer visitors, on Memorial Day Weekend, it’s a different story.

Expect busy crowds from the Thursday or Friday before Memorial Day until a day or two after the holiday. If your budget allows, consider purchasing Lightning Multi-Trajectory Path to skip the regular standby lines at parks like Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios where you’ll probably experience the worst crowding.

Pack up and prepare for the summer weather

May is the first month of the year You can assume that the days will be hotter than colder days. As far as Florida weather is concerned, ssummer starts now — although you probably won’t experience the thick, thick air you’re used to if you visit in August or September.

These tips are important all year round, but they become even more important in the summer: stay hydrated, apply and reapply your sunscreen, take frequent indoor breaks, and consider taking longer daytime breaks at a hotel.
